The Chairman of National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, today, 8th September 2025, delivered an inspiring speech at the 46th Annual International Conference, Workshop, and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Cartographic Association (NCA) held at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Headquarters in Abuja.
In his address, Hon. Kwarra highlighted the transformative role of cartography, geospatial sciences & intelligence, and Geographic Information System (GIS) in addressing critical challenges in governance, poverty alleviation, and security management, which are central to Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals. He noted that the NPC relies heavily on geospatial technologies to map population dynamics, monitor socio-economic trends, and support evidence-based policymaking, ensuring that no one is left behind in Nigeria's quest for inclusive growth.
Hon. Kwarra expressed gratitude to the NCA for the honour of being a Distinguished Special Guest of Honour. He emphasized the significance of the conference theme, "Geo-Spatial Intelligence Mapping for Governance, Poverty Alleviation & Security Management," highlighting its relevance to the NPC's mandate of generating reliable demographic and geospatial data to support national planning and sustainable development.
"This conference provides a vital platform to harness information and share expertise in tackling pressing issues such as poverty and insecurity," Hon Kwarra stated. He praised the NCA for its longstanding commitment to advancing cartography and geospatial sciences since its establishment in 1978.
The NPC Chairman also highlighted the conference's diverse activities, including technical sessions, workshops, and initiatives aimed at promoting interest in cartography among young people. He urged attendees to use the conference as a catalyst for translating ideas into practical solutions that enhance governance and foster sustainable development.
"We can build a future where cartography and geospatial sciences empower informed decision-making," Hon. Kwarra concluded, reaffirming the NPC's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the NCA in advancing Nigeria's sustainable development goals and the reforms enshrined in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Hon. Kwarra was accompanied by the Director-General of the NPC, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun, along with several technical staff members.
The conference brought together distinguished guests, experts, and professionals from across the country and beyond, including Etsu Nupe, HRH Yahaya Abubakar, and the Director-General/CEO of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju.
The Commission also showcased its geospatial resources at the conference, highlighting its commitment to leveraging technology for national development.
